Veljo Tormis 95 | 110 helletust
You can never fully know in advance whether something will succeed, whether the audience will come, whether it will matter to anyone, whether the budget will even work, etc. 100 people on stage singing Tormis – Tormis is familiar, maybe 100 is too massive, will the choirs even bother? Phew, we are so glad this project started and took place exactly as it did!
We are happy that we got to sing our favourite music together! We sang our favourite works, including some new to us, such as “Helletused”. By the way, we counted how many Tormis works we have collectively had in our repertoire over the last 10 years – we reached 58 songs (cycle movements counted separately).
We are happy to notice that such a joint project has brought us, choirs that are otherwise seemingly in a competitive situation, and their singers closer together. The eight joint rehearsals had a warm and supportive atmosphere – we sat and sang mixed together and could simply and deeply be carriers of song. We are 110 people in a shared Messenger group, which in addition to operational communication has become a nice post-concert decompression space. When three choir buses are driving on the Tallinn–Tartu highway at the same time – and even if we have already said our goodbyes and farewells – thoughts still arise, feedback reaches us, we want to extend the moment! It is great to laugh together, to be moved together. We are happy that you are happy! That what we put into the concerts and the project as a whole reached the audience so vividly. We are proud that all singers performed from original scores, thereby directly contributing to the composer’s legacy. We read all feedback and summaries with joy and interest. Those who still wish to share their concert impressions can find the form HERE.
It is also nice to see that the public sector has shown interest and had the opportunity to support this large project. We did of course work very hard ourselves and cut costs where possible, but without sufficient cultural funding, such an initiative would not have been possible. Private sponsorship unfortunately was not successful in this project.
If you would like to support the Veljo Tormis Centre through our five choirs, you are warmly invited to make a donation to our account until 10 October. 100% of donations made at this time will be forwarded to the centre. We will first collect everything together and make one consolidated transfer on behalf of the five choirs. Information is below, bank link is HERE.
For the Tormis anniversary, a lot of merchandise was created. T-shirts “Tonksti!” and “vuia-vuia” are still available in several sizes, so feel free to order from the remaining stock! It is also possible to purchase a new special chocolate created for Veljo Tormis’ anniversary “Helletused from land and sea”, which contains organic juniper berries and sea salt. The singers who tasted the first samples in large numbers approved it! Order link.
Finally, a thought from a conductor: “So, I’ll put on some self-help podcast now just to fall asleep and start recovering from this. Do I even want to? Today was so powerful. I know these people are my Estonia!”
Thank you, we had such a wonderful time!
